“There is ample research on the benefits of doulas at births. (Hodnett, 2013) When the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) released their groundbreaking “Safe Prevention of the Primary Cesarean Delivery” Obstetric Care Consensus Statement in February 2014, one of their key recommendations to reduce the primary cesarean rate in the USA was the continuous presence of a doula at a birth. (Caughey, 2014)”
Doula Support
A birth doula is a person trained and experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth.
The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “Woman’s servant”. Throughout history and in much of the world today, a cadre of women support a woman through labor and birth, giving back rubs and providing continuous emotional support.
A doula provides support and uninterrupted care for a woman in labour. I meet with the mother and her partner a few times before the birth. I will be in contact with you during early labor and will come and be with you when your labour has started establishing into active labour. I will accompany both you and your partner throughout labor and delivery. I will provide physical and emotional support, comfort and pain-coping measures, encouragement, and aid your partner in being able to support you to the best of his ability. I will advocate for the mother and her partner and help them make informed decisions. After the birth, I will visit you at your home or hospital to see if you need to debrief the birth or aid you with any resources you may need during the postpartum period.
I deeply understand, trust, and respect the process of labour and birth. My goal is to support the emotional and physical journey of the mother and her partner. At all times I strive to provide the best possible experience for the family that I am supporting and ease their transition into parenthood.

FAQ Questions & Answers
How much does a doula cost in Brisbane?
Doula services in Brisbane vary depending on the level of support provided and the experience of the doula. Packages often include prenatal sessions, continuous labour support during birth and a postnatal visit. Prices can range anywhere from around $1,500 to $4,000 depending on the doula’s experience, training and what is included in the support package.
When should I hire a doula?
Many families book their doula during the mid to end of the first trimester to ensure availability and allow plenty of time for birth preparation. However, some women reach out later in pregnancy and are still able to receive support depending on availability. Experienced doulas are often booked well in advance, so it’s generally recommended to enquire earlier rather than later.
Do doulas attend hospital births in Brisbane?
Yes. Doulas support births in hospitals, birth centres and home births. Their role is to provide continuous emotional and physical support throughout labour while working alongside your midwife or obstetrician.
What does a doula actually do during labour?
During labour a doula provides comfort measures such as breathing techniques, position suggestions, massage and reassurance. A doula also supports your partner so they feel confident helping you throughout the birth.
Is hiring a doula worth it?
Many families feel that having a doula helps them feel more confident and supported during labour. Research has shown that continuous support during labour is associated with improved birth outcomes and higher satisfaction with the birth experience. These benefits have been observed even when a partner or other support person is present, as doulas provide dedicated emotional, physical and informational support throughout labour.
Can a doula support my partner as well?
Yes. A doula supports both the mother and the partner. Many partners appreciate having guidance during labour so they know how best to support the mother and feel involved in the birth experience.
Can I have a doula if I’m having a hospital birth with an epidural?
Yes. Many women choose to have a doula regardless of whether they plan to have a natural birth or an epidural. A doula provides emotional support, reassurance and comfort throughout the labour process. Doulas can also suggest position changes in the bed, including when an epidural is in place, which may help support comfort and encourage labour progress. They can also help communicate preferences and questions with medical staff, working alongside midwives and obstetricians to support the birthing woman and her partner.
