HypnoBirthing ~ The Mongan Method ®

HypnoBirthing ® – The Mongan Method is a complete childbirth education program that teaches expectant couples to view birth as a normal, natural, healthy part of life, rather than a medical emergency. In the absence of fear and tension, a woman’s body is uniquely and perfectly designed to birth comfortably, serenely, and safely. HypnoBirthing dispels the myths and fears that lead to anxiety and negative expectations about the process of normal childbirth. Working with a certified practitioner, parents will learn powerful relaxation techniques that enable mothers to birth as nature intended.

HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The HypnoBirthing® method was developed by Marie Mongan, a hypnotherapist who used the techniques during the births of her own children. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a “rebirth” of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who, in the 1920s, was one of the first to forward the concept of natural birthing. The method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.

You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony–as they were designed to–when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.

When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.

You will be conversant and in good spirits–totally relaxed, but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.

The HypnoBirthing® Premise

The HypnoBirthing® Premise For most of their lives, women have been inundated with the negative stories of other women’s birth experiences. Everyone, from their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends, and even strangers, wants to tell them the horrors of giving birth. They have been conditioned to believe that excruciating pain is associated with labor; and because of this, women today hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth. This extreme fear causes their bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits their bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function. The result is exactly what they feared most—long, painful birthing or unnecessary intervention.

People who are drawn to this method of childbirth have long been searching for a way to give birth confidently and as calmly, safely, and gently as possible, whether they have chosen to birth in a hospital, a birthing center or at home. Until HypnoBirthing, this kind of birthing almost seemed unattainable for the general population.

Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, healthy, low-risk women, as well as women who need medical assistance because of special circumstances, learn to dismiss fear-based stories, misinformation, and birthing myths, and they are helped to see birth as normal. They learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in the calm and gentle way that Nature intended.

The Advantages of HypnoBirthing ®

  • Provides accurate pregnancy and birth information, emphasising the body’s ability to birth comfortably, and releasing fears that can lead to tension and discomfort.
  • Effective relaxation techniques allow women to give birth as nature intended: without suffering. Some women have painless births using the relaxation and breathing exercises, although HypnoBirthing doesn’t promise pain-free birthing.
  • HypnoBirthing® skills allow you to stay calm and focused should your birthing take an unexpected turn. It helps you to visualise and create the best possible outcome for you and your baby.
  • The deep relaxation of HypnoBirthing® leads to shorter, easier labours with fewer complications.
  • Greatly reduces the need for interventions.
  • HypnoBirthing® helps parents bond with their growing child during pregnancy, which can help to reduce the “baby-blues” after the baby is born.
  • HypnoBirthing® mums are both deeply relaxed and completely present and aware during birth.
  • It helps to preserve the intimate, quiet atmosphere that is most conducive to a gentle birth experience.

Servicing Brisbane and surrounds

According to Dr Grantly Dick-Read, when fear is not present neither is pain.

Fear causes the arteries leading to the uterus to constrict and become tense, creating pain.

In the absence of fear, the muscles relax and become pliable,

and the cervix is able to naturally thin and open as the body pulsates rhythmically and expels the baby with ease.

Through deep relaxation and innate breathing,

you can rid your body of the debilitating fear that creates tension and labour pain.

HypnoBirthing® creates the ideal platform for women,

their partners and their babies to learn the necessary tools in order to achieve their ultimate birth wishes.

It reminds us that birth is normal and natural,

and like the bodies of other mammals in nature, a healthy pregnant woman instinctively knows how to birth,

just as their bodies instinctively know how to conceive and nurture the development of their babies.

The HypnoBirthing program and antenatal class is now used in 6 Australian hospitals,

is recommended by midwives and obstetricians and has over 180 certified practitioners because it is evidenced based, and it works!

“According To Physiological Law, All Natural, Normal Functions Of The Body Are Achieved Without Peril Or Pain.  Birth Is A Natural, Normal, Physiological Function For Normal, Healthy Women And Their Healthy Babies.  It Can, Therefore, Be Inferred That Healthy Women, Carrying Healthy Babies, Can Safely Birth Without Peril Or Pain”.

FAQ

How soon can I start HypnoBirthing classes

There is no firm time however from 20 weeks on is recommended. We find most parents like to start their HypnoBirthing preparations between 20 – 35 weeks.

My partner works away. Is it necessary for him/her to attend?

We recommend that partner’s attend all HypnoBirthing classes wherever possible, along with an additional support  person. The support person can be a doula or family member who will attend classes with you and assist with your practice.

With fly-ins/fly-outs, the recommendation is to start HypnoBirthing classes as early as possible, around the 20 weeks so that there is plenty of opportunity to attend the classes together, or arrange for some private in-home sessions with your local practitioner.

Talk to your closest practitioner about how they can best work with you in your circumstances. There is flexibility for special circumstances.

Can I do a weekend course?

It is not recommended as part of the HypnoBirthing programme in order to achieve optimal benefits.

The exception is when you are very late in your pregnancy where only part of the programme can be covered to help you in the best way we can to achieve the best outcome for your birth.

The HypnoBirthing course gives adequate time for practice, reflection, time to get to know your baby and to know what and how you wish to birth and also ask questions in each class. We will help you over this time to become confident, familiar and relaxed.

A weekend course can create information overload, and we are learning from the hospitals that mothers that have taken weekend courses with other programs are not doing as well. We know that this program has been cleverly designed over our session times to enable you to release fears and have positive preparation. We want you to have the best birth you can, so we would be shortchanging you by working with you over a weekend. The session format is definitely best for learning, results and preparing for a happy, calm birth.

Testimonials

Spending 5 weeks with Moran was such a joy! I have been excited to learn the hypnobirthing methods for a long time and I was not dissapointed. Her classes were so enjoyable and informative. All of her years as a doula shone through with such passion and wisdom. I enjoyed her slide show format which was supported by videos and hands-on learning. I found the classes to be practical and fun and I would recommend them for every pregnancy woman to attend with her birthing partner. Thank you Moran for sharing what you love with your community…and a special thank you for the yummy treats and tea each session! ❤️

Moran is amazing! I rang her at 34 weeks (3 weeks before Christmas) freaking out that I wasn’t going to be prepared to have my baby and she was able to make time for my husband and I to have some intensive sessions. They were informative, relevant and up to date to help us make the best decisions for our birth. She is calm, kind and understanding of all the possible fears new parents might be holding on to. My husband found her to be inclusive and supportive, while giving him the knowledge that he sorely needed to act as my voice during the birth. She has increased our confidence 10 fold heading into what used to feel like ‘the unknown’. Thank you Moran!

My husband and I undertook a hypnobirthing course with Moran earlier this year and I must say, she is extremely knowledgeable and well versed. Whilst I wished for a natural birth, I was unable to do so, I still felt a great deal of power from the knowledge I acquired during the course. Her course on hypnobirthing prepared us slowly on what to expect from our bodies and the healthcare system. She presented a detailed breakdown of the different choices available to us during birth, induction, and c-section, and how to support one another during before, during and after birth. After the course, we both felt educated on our rights during the whole process, we were given leaflets, booklets, cds, books, videos and letters to help us understand the content of the course, as well as some information to present to medical staff to ensure that our wishes were respected. Whilst I had to have a c section, I felt that Moran and this hypnobirthing course played a big part when it came to my calm attitude throughout it all. My husband and I are business owners and Moran was the perfect hypnobirthing teacher for us, she made it very casual and fun for us and we are forever grateful for all of her help and support.

The hypnobirthing classes re-framed my idea of how birth should be and gave me confidence in myself. Moran was able to clearly and gently direct my mind away from the terrifying depiction of birth that we see all to much, to the truth of it as a natural act that women and babies are built for. More importantly, Moran taught me how to draw on my deep seated instincts as tools to bring about a calm and natural birth. She also articulated the importance of my husband’s presence and role in the labour, something I never knew to be so relevant to the whole experience. Without her extensive knowledge and soothing teaching style, I don’t know if I could have trusted my body to give birth naturally. I went into labour at 6:00pm and welcomed my firstborn and son at 4:00am on Valentine’s Day. It was a natural birth and even though there were a few hiccups (his heart rate went down) I was able to keep calm and breath him out. He was perfectly healthy and latched within 30 minutes. Thank you Moran!

To help me with some of the uneasiness I was feeling about birth generally, my husband and I (maybe half heartedly and fully in the dark) signed up for hypnobirthing classes with Moran based on a recommendation from a friend. Moran was the perfect mix of thoughtful, insightful, compassionate and absolutely capable. 3 years later and I still look back on that time so fondly.
