HypnoBirthing ® – The Mongan Method is a complete childbirth education program that teaches expectant couples to view birth as a normal, natural, healthy part of life, rather than a medical emergency. In the absence of fear and tension, a woman’s body is uniquely and perfectly designed to birth comfortably, serenely, and safely. HypnoBirthing dispels the myths and fears that lead to anxiety and negative expectations about the process of normal childbirth. Working with a certified practitioner, parents will learn powerful relaxation techniques that enable mothers to birth as nature intended.
HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The HypnoBirthing® method was developed by Marie Mongan, a hypnotherapist who used the techniques during the births of her own children. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a “rebirth” of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who, in the 1920s, was one of the first to forward the concept of natural birthing. The method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.
You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony–as they were designed to–when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.
When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.
You will be conversant and in good spirits–totally relaxed, but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.

The HypnoBirthing® Premise For most of their lives, women have been inundated with the negative stories of other women’s birth experiences. Everyone, from their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends, and even strangers, wants to tell them the horrors of giving birth. They have been conditioned to believe that excruciating pain is associated with labor; and because of this, women today hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth. This extreme fear causes their bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits their bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function. The result is exactly what they feared most—long, painful birthing or unnecessary intervention.
People who are drawn to this method of childbirth have long been searching for a way to give birth confidently and as calmly, safely, and gently as possible, whether they have chosen to birth in a hospital, a birthing center or at home. Until HypnoBirthing, this kind of birthing almost seemed unattainable for the general population.
Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, healthy, low-risk women, as well as women who need medical assistance because of special circumstances, learn to dismiss fear-based stories, misinformation, and birthing myths, and they are helped to see birth as normal. HypnoBirthing® group classes are $600 per couple, which includes all your class materials. $900 for private classes
HypnoBirthing® classes can be taken at any time during your pregnancy. Around 20-32 weeks is a good time-frame, although later or earlier in your pregnancy will work just as well.

FAQ
How soon can I start HypnoBirthing classes
There is no firm time however from 20 weeks on is recommended. We find most parents like to start their HypnoBirthing preparations between 20 – 35 weeks.
My partner works away. Is it necessary for him/her to attend?
We recommend that partner’s attend all HypnoBirthing classes wherever possible, along with an additional support person. The support person can be a doula or family member who will attend classes with you and assist with your practice.
With fly-ins/fly-outs, the recommendation is to start HypnoBirthing classes as early as possible, around the 20 weeks so that there is plenty of opportunity to attend the classes together, or arrange for some private in-home sessions with your local practitioner.
Talk to your closest practitioner about how they can best work with you in your circumstances. There is flexibility for special circumstances.
